Love It: The Gratitude Challenge Day 3—Thank Goodness I’m a Writer

August 16, 2009

Today’s Challenge assignment is to write a blog post about something I feel grateful for in my life. I love so many things about my current situation, from my fabulous friends to my adorable little apartment, my family, my good health, the fact that Rubio’s recently opened a location right by my house and that there are dozens of froyo shops within walking distance, too—but I couldn’t decide what was important enough to warrant a TGC post.

I’ve thought about it all day, and I finally came to a conclusion that there’s one thing that consistently makes me profoundly happy—thank goodness I’m a writer!

When I was a kid, I used to write stories about all of the people I knew, turning my sister into a fish named Helga whenever I was mad at her. In high school, my English teachers photocopied my papers and handed them out to the class as examples. In college, I was the only person ever invited to join the newspaper staff mid-year because I didn’t miss a single error on my copywriting test. Now, I spend 12 hours a day writing, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

Nexus

The Daily Nexus was the best college newspaper ever! Go Gauchos!

I was a huge nerd in school, and I did well in math and science and history, too, but there was something about writing that felt natural to me. I actually wanted to learn the rules that govern the proper placement of a comma. I was charmed by how a well-written line could suck you into a story, giving you goosebumps, a fit of rage or a lump in your throat.

I’ve loved writing all my life, and I don’t think there’s anything in the world that I’m better suited to do. So when I think about the things that make me most grateful, I have to say that every day I count my lucky stars that my business cards say that little six letter word on it. I love being a writer, and I will always be profoundly grateful for this opportunity to pursue my passions as my career.
