Love It: Day 1 of The Gratitude Challenge

August 14, 2009

I just got the cutest little gift pack from The Gratitude Challenge! Along with a handwritten thank you note, the Challenge sent me gifts (I can’t open them until a particular day—oh the suspense!), a t-shirt that says “Take Note. Give Thanks.”, a beautifully written pledge I was asked to sign and a pretty desktop calendar that I can change each day to read my latest assignment.

I feel grateful already!

Today’s task is to write about why I accepted the Challenge and what I hope to achieve through my participation. When I really think about it, this project comes at the perfect time.

LiHi readers might know that I’m a single girl living far from home, so I’ve spent the last year building a new community for myself. Now, the cornerstone of that community—my best friend—is moving to the East Coast.

I’m so overwhelmingly excited for her and all of the new opportunities waiting for her there, but I feel sad knowing that she won’t be just down the road, waiting to get drinks or ice cream, or to go shopping and watch trashy reality TV.

She’s the one person I can talk to about anything. We’ve traveled together, studied together, worked together, cried together and laughed until we cried together, too. She’s irreplaceable.

So I joined the Challenge to figure out how to see the positive side of situations like this. I hope to learn how to put her on that plane, blow her a kiss and walk away laughing at all of the crazy times we’ve had together in the past (and anticipating all of the fun that’s still to come in the years ahead).

I want to stay on the brighter side of life, even through times like this. I know she wouldn’t want it any other way.

Yikes, that is exactly what is happening to me but opposite- I am the one moving away from my best friend! So sad, but still, like you said, really exciting. 😦 I hadn’t really thought about doing the Gratitude Challenge and my moving away in the same moment before and now I am…gulp… worried! This may be more than I thought it would be. Anyway, I will keep an eye on you through this thing if you will keep and eye on me…
